Out of the Fire: A Life Radically Changed by David Hobbs

Consumer Copy:

Fire holds a place of fascination in our culture. The story of David Hobbs brings both the destructiveness and purification of this force into the foreground. Just as the movie Backdraft used the subject matter to delve into the madness of life and the transcendence of virtue, so does Out of the Fire speak to the paradox that confronts us all: the excitement, the horror and the redemption of the human experience.

After young David Hobbs leaves his midwestern hometown for college, he spends eight summers fighting wildfires for the U.S. Forest Service. He finds, as his life begins to go up in flames, a powerful and spiritual awakening. Far from the life he imagined, David's future is charred by his inability to deal with intimate relationships, his history of arrests involving drug-charges, and eventually, his not-so-glamorous exodus from the Forest Service. Out of The Fire follows the events, from the ranks of an elite fire crew on the Klamath National Forest, to a "summer of love" in Berkeley, California, as they lead him, eventually, to call upon the God he once rejected.
